Lions player considered finger amputation following grotesque injury

In 1986, Ronnie Lott had doctors amputate the top part of his finger so he could be ready for the season. More than 25 years later, a Lions player almost did the same thing. Defensive tackle Wille Young suffered a grotesque middle finger injury on November 18th against the Green Bay Packers.

The injury occurred while Young attempted to tackle running back James Starks. He knew it was bad immediately but decided not to take off his glove until after the game. “I refused to look at it,” he said. “I said we will worry about it when the game is over. When I did take that glove off, this is not what I was expecting to see. But this is what I have to deal with.”

According to Young, the injury was down to the bone and nerves were severed in the process. He’s currently treating it with disinfectant, tape and presumably a boatload of painkillers. If you want to see the finger, scroll down. Warning, it’s not safe for life (via @Justin_Rogers).
