Mike Rice issued a tearful apology this morning moments after his firing by Rutgers. A video of Rice physically and verbally assaulting players went viral yesterday prompting the dismissal. In his statement, Rice called his actions “deeply regrettable” and said he let his family down.
Rice was fired not because of his actions but rather because his actions were made public. To further simplify—it hurts the image of the school and above all, hurts recruiting. Nobody wants to play for a guy who’s whipping balls at their head. How’s that for an obvious statement?
