Last Friday, a 9-years-old boy brought cupcakes topped with his favorite little green army men to school. The principal deemed them to be insensitive and removed the hood ornaments. As you can imagine, the kid’s dad then threw a shit-fit. People are quick to create a controversy out of nothing, but I didn’t expect one on account of cupcakes.
Casey Fountain told Fox News that the principal of his son’s elementary school called the cupcakes “insensitive” — in light of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.
“It disgusted me,” he said. “It’s vile they lump true American heroes with psychopathic killers.”
…
“the school called my wife and told her the couldn’t serve the cupcakes because the soldiers had guns,” Fountain told Fox News. “My wife told them to remove the soldiers and serve the cupcakes anyway — and I believe she may have used more colorful language.”The school complied and confiscated the soldiers — sending them home with Hunter in a bag.
It seems extreme to not allow little green soldiers on top of cupcakes, but it’s not entirely unreasonable. What seems a little disproportionate is the reaction from the kid’s father.
Yes, the principal’s decision may be too politically correct for some people’s taste, mine included, but to call a news station and complain is more ridiculous. We are in constant public discussion about how guns in schools, so sending toy soldiers was a dumb idea. It doesn’t matter that they’re tiny and green. School aren’t going to let play with Nerf guns during recess, and those are even less real than green army men.
