Because there’s a lot to be said about these things. When Disney bought Lucasfilm, they happily announced that they intended to trot out the old Star Wars horse and start milking it for all it’s worth, to mix a metaphor. That means a new trilogy, of course (to fit with Lucas’s original plans for the franchise, which was a total of nine movies), but it also means… some other things. All of the characters in the vast Star Wars universe are open for business, and Disney intends to get their money’s worth.
One of the pervasive rumors after the buyout was that we’d see a lot of Star Wars movies – Disney’s Kathleen Kennedy talked to Entertainment Weekly and stated that after the J.J. Abrams-directed Episode VII, the studio wants to do two or three films a year. They won’t all be Star Wars movies, of course, but smart money is on a fair amount of them being.
The current buzz is that the films will focus on individual characters from the franchise, exploring different times in their history. Their are about six million Star Wars novels that the studio can use to get material for these flicks, and a recent interview with Disney’s Bob Iger seems to lend credence to this. Iger didn’t drop any spoilers, but he did say that screenwriters Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are working on “stand alone films” “derived from great Star Wars characters.” So that’s confirmation at least.
Interestingly enough, one character that seems to be in the lead for his own film is the wizened Jedi master Yoda. The prequels already showed he’s a dude who could kick ass in his youth, and he’s got great visual recognition, so it’s a smart pick. Other characters on the possible slate include bounty hunter Boba Fett and even the morbidly obese Jabba the Hutt, based on a treatment that Lucas wrote a while ago. How about you? What Star Wars character do you think should get their own movie?
