Adrien Brody took home his second Academy Award for Best Actor on Sunday night, winning the prize for his performance in The Brutalist. Brody became the youngest actor to ever win the award when he won Best Actor for his work in The Pianist at 29 years old.

While Adrien Brody was the betting favorite heading into the night, his win was not without a bit of controversy, however, as a report from earlier this year revealed that AI tools were used to improve the Hungarian accents of both Brody and co-star Felicity Jones.

Both Brody and director Brady Corbet defended the use of AI in the film, arguing that the technology, from Ukranian software company Respeecher, was used only to ensure linguistic accuracy without replacing or modifying the original delivery or performances of the actors. Beyond the AI controversy, there were also those that felt other performances, particularly that of Timothee Chalamet as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.

Nevertheless, Brody, entering the night with close to 2-to-1 odds to win Best Actor, took home the prize and was therefore able to give an acceptance speech, which ultimately became the longest in the entire history of the Academy Awards at 5 minutes and 40 seconds, leaving movie fans feeling quite perturbed by its pompousness and aimlessness.

“Subjecting Cillian Murphy to the longest Oscar speech in history should be a crime,” joked a tweet with over 8 million views and 420,000 likes (at the time of this writing).

“I feel like Adrien Brody is the first person I’ve ever seen implore the orchestra to stop playing them off while seemingly having no particular idea about what they wanted to say with that extra time,” one viral tweet said of his speech.

In addition to the frustration with his speech, there were also some movie fans who simply believed he was not deserving of the award in the wake of the the AI controversy that revealed parts of his accent were enhanced using Respeecher.

“Adrien Brody winning an award where they used ai to enhance his accent over Timothee Chalamet, Sebastian Stan, Ralph Fiennes, and Colman Domingo just shows how little the Academy actually cares about true acting skill,” a tweet with over 119,000 likes read.

One obvious cinema and NFL fan compared Brody’s career to that of Eli Manning, which in between twice reaching the pinnacle of his profession, has been largely average.

“What a wild career Adrian Brody has had, he’s like the Eli Manning of acting, he’s somehow won two of these and mostly thrown a lot of interceptions otherwise.”

In addition to Brody winning for Best Actor, Mikey Madison won Best Actress for her work on Anora, while Kieran Culkin and Zoe Saldana won for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress, respectively. Anora was the big winner on the night, as it also took home the prizes for Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Director, and Best Picture.
