A Texas public health official is warning people to stop holding and attending “measles parties” as the outbreak has now spread to nine states across America. He issued this earning because deliberately exposing unvaccinated people to measles comes with a whole host of risks.

“We can’t predict who is going to do poorly with measles, being hospitalized, potentially get pneumonia or encephalitis, or potentially pass away from this,” warned Dr. Ron Cook, chief health officer for the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock. “It’s a foolish thing to go have measles parties.”

For those unfamiliar, bless you, but here’s why people would hold a measles party. Some people believe that if you deliberately expose an unvaccinated person to a disease or virus so that they will contract it, they will then become immune without having to go through the simple process of getting vaccinated.

Dr. Cook also explained to KCBD News that taking large doses of vitamin A to prevent or cure measles is also a bad idea.

“You can’t pee out vitamin A,” he said. “Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin, not water soluble. When you get those big doses, it can cause a lot of problems.”

He also wanted to clear up another falsehood about the measles vaccine. “It is absolutely not associated with autism. That’s been disproven and it should never have been started,” he said.

So far, the measles outbreak which started in Texas has spread to New Mexico, Alaska, California, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.

Things have gotten so bad that even Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has issued a call to action.

“Vaccines not only protect individual children from measles, but also contribute to community immunity, protecting those who are unable to be vaccinated due to medical reasons,” he wrote, adding, “As healthcare providers, community leaders, and policymakers, we have a shared responsibility to protect public health. This includes ensuring that accurate information about vaccine safety and efficacy is disseminated. We must engage with communities to understand their concerns, provide culturally competent education, and make vaccines readily accessible for all those who want them.”

Mexico’s Health Secretary has also issued a warning to citizens in the state of Nuevo León, located south of the Lone Star State, to not travel to the Texas unless they have received the measles vaccine. Measles cases are also on the rise in Canada, with British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec especially being effected.

“If you look at Ontario in the 2025 calendar year, it’s only February. And we already have roughly the same amount of cases of measles in February of 2025 as we did all of 2024. So no, we are not headed in the right direction,” said Dr. Isaac Bogoch, an infectious diseases specialist at Toronto General Hospital.
