We live in a totally weird-ass world, friends. So there’s a big benefit concert tonight at Madison Square Garden to benefit Hurricane Sandy victims, which is a pretty awesome thing. The lineup is a star-studded affair, with Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, Kanye West, Bruce Springsteen and dozens of other A-list musicians scheduled to perform.
Oh, and Nirvana is getting back together with Paul McCartney in the Kurt Cobain role.
Whaaaaaat? At least that’s what notoriously unreliable British newspaper The Sun is reporting. The article states that McCartney has been secretly rehearsing a new song with Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and unofficial “fourth Nirvana member” Pat Smear after a recent studio session. Those two haven’t played together publicly for 20 years, since Cobain took his own life in 1994.
The thing is, if you know Nirvana this isn’t all that weird. For all of their bombast and grunge, the band was deeply indebted to the Beatles. “All Apologies” is basically a straight Xerox of “Norwegian Wood,” for example. The event’s organizers haven’t confirmed or denied the rumor, which means that in all likelihood it’s probably true. It starts at 7:30 tonight and will be televised on several different networks, including HBO and Showtime.
