The Cuba Libre sounds like a fancy cocktail, but it’s really just a rum and Coke. There’s some fun history behind it though, which Bacardi is using in their new marketing campaign. I’d do the same thing if I could reference Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders all while showing a beautiful woman with a garter-flask. There is some debate as to whether Bacardi’s claim is true, but it’s good enough for me. It’s definitley a better story than, “some guy made it up in a bar.” Ironically enough, Coke isn’t sold in Cuba anymore, which is why no one there smiles.
