Shocking video has surfaced of Rutgers coach Mike Rice assaulting players with basketballs and verbally abusing them during practice. At one point in the video, Rice utters a homophobic slur and kicks a player. He was suspended for three games and given a $50,000 fine in December by Rutgers officials.
Allegations were made by director of player development Eric Murdock last summer but Rutgers AD Tim Pernetti chose not to act until video presented itself in November.
“None of that behavior is acceptable —under any circumstance at Rutgers. Mike Rice wavered from the Rutgers standard and we penalized him for a first offense to re-educate him on the Rutgers standard and can I assure you on a going forward basis that none of this behavior will occur. If something within a sniff of it occurs, there will be worse consequences.”
So there you have it folks. Treating players sub-humanly at Rutgers is worthy of a three-game suspension. I shudder to think what earns 5 games.
