If you’re a musician, you’re probably familiar with the iRig. It’s an interface that lets you plug a guitar directly into an iPad or iPhone and record a few licks. It wasn’t perfect, but it was pretty handy, especially for the price.

Good news, thrashers who need something portable: The iRig has been overhauled, and it makes an already good item a lot better.

The guts of the iRig are a 24-bit analog-to-digital converter that reduces noise and offers the cleanest signal possible. It also doesn’t need a battery: It’ll draw power from your iDevice or a USB port. That last is probably the biggest drawback; there’s no data on how much power the iRig uses, although it looks fairly low, but it’s still going to put more of a drain on your battery.

As for app compatibility, it comes with free apps to record with but will also work with most third-party apps, so you won’t have to record a part in one app and move it to another. The iRig HD will be available soon, and while pricing isn’t available yet, the original iRig was $40, so plan accordingly.
