One of the most bizarre lawless-athlete stories of the decade involved Ugueth Urbina and his 2005 machete wielding, arson incident. The pitcher claimed he was protecting his Venezuelan home and in doing so, needed to use all means necessary.
Not surprisingly, hacking someone with a machete and lighting them on fire are crimes, even in developing nations. He spent five years in prison as a result.
This Christmas however, Uggy finds himself in a much comfortable setting—his home. He was released nine years early, presumably for good behavior. Sound legal system they have there in Venezuela but I digress.
Many people believed Urbina’s loss of sanity was payback for his mother’s kidnap early that year. An incident that required a daunting rescue from Venezuelan special forces.
